Application deadlines for 2008 have now passed. 2009 deadlines will be posted here in the new year.

2008 Research into Ageing

Our strategy is to support high-quality research into ageing and the understanding, prevention and treatment of age-related conditions. We also aim to build capacity in research into ageing in the UK and focus our funding streams to reflect this aim. We have a special initiative to promote and build research capacity into incontinence.

Research into Ageing biomedical research awards are available to applicants of any nationality, but they must be based in the UK within a recognised academic institution.

Please note: We do not fund policy/social research or health service evaluation.

Proposal forms for forthcoming deadlines are available to download in Microsoft Word format. If you experience any problems in accessing the documents, please email helen.rippon@ageing.org

PhD Studentships

Please note: In recent years we have received a high number of applications for this scheme, and we have only been able to fund 1 in 10 of the applications that passed the outline stage.  In order to give researchers a better chance of being funded at the full application stage, the review of outline applications will be on both remit and quality assessment by the Research Advisory Council.

The PhD Studentship scheme is designed to ensure a flow of first-class students into the field of ageing research, providing them with an excellent training in research. It provides a generous stipend (£15,500 pa for applicants based inside the M25, and £14,500 pa for those based elsewhere in the UK), university fees (up to £3,000 pa), expenses for consumables (up to £5,000 pa) and travel (up to £500 pa).

Applications must be made by the potential candidate's supervisor. In order to allow recruitment of the most able students early in their final year, awards are made in November for appointment in summer/autumn the following year. Supervisors are responsible for recruiting a graduate with a first or upper second class honours degree.

When assessing applications, in addition to the scientific merit of the project and its relevance to the aims of the Charity, Research into Ageing will pay particular attention to the supervision record and quality of training offered by the department and proposed supervisor.

The deadline for applications is 1 May 2008 and the final decision is made in November 2008 for an award to start in summer/autumn 2009.

Research into Ageing Fellowships provide an opportunity for post-doctoral scientists to become independent researchers and to undertake research of high quality, or for those medically qualified to obtain research training in a relevant field.

Applicants should write their own application for support of an independent project. They must have at least three years post-doctoral experience, a solid track record in a relevant area and intend to maintain a long-term interest in ageing research.

Research Fellowships are tenable initially for three years to provide personal support and research expenses (usually not more than £15,000 pa) for the duration of the award.

In addition to the scientific merit of the proposed research, the Charity will also consider the potential of the candidate to become an independent and competitive researcher, the quality of the environment in which the award is to be held, and the support provided by the host institution to help develop the candidate's career in research.

The deadline for applications is 5pm 1 May 2008 and the final decision is made in November 2008.

Successful applicants may further apply in the third year of their Fellowship for a further three year's funding.

A formal review of the fellow's progress and achievements will then be arranged. For extension details please email helen.rippon@ageing.org

The award may include up to six months in another laboratory (not restricted to the UK).

Small Incontinence Awards

Research into Ageing Small Incontinence Awards provide support for up to two years for research into urinary or faecal incontinence. This scheme is designed to enable established researchers to embark on projects to understand the pathogenic mechanisms of incontinence or to pilot clinical interventions.

The level of support will be a maximum of £50,000 and may cover part-time support and consumables.

The deadline for applications is 5pm 2 June 2008 and the final decision is made in November 2008.

Discipline Hopping Awards

Before applying please check eligibility (PDF)

Research into Ageing Discipline Hopping Awards are available to established researchers (lecturer or above) who can demonstrate a strong track record in their own field, but who are not established in ageing research, to apply for funding to investigate and develop ideas, skills and collaborations in ageing research. Discipline Hopping awards are open to established.

The award will provide support up to 2 years to a maximum of £50,000. The award may cover salary (not the applicant's) and consumables.

The deadline for applications is 5 pm 2 June 2008 and the final decision is made in November 2008.

Clinical Research Fellowships

Before applying please check eligibility (PDF)

The British Geriatrics Society and Research into Ageing are delighted to announce the availability of research training fellowships, open to members of the BGS with an NTN in Geriatric Medicine wishing to train in academic geriatric medicine. These fellowships are jointly funded by the British Geriatrics Society and Research into Ageing or by the British Geriatrics Society alone.  Outline applications are invited from the prospective applicants for project start after December 2008. The funding is for a period of up to three years and should not exceed £250,000. A PhD training is encouraged. The deadline for outline applications is 5pm 1 May 2008.

Project grants

Please note: In recent years we have received a high number of applications for this scheme, and we have only been able to fund 1 in 10 of the applications that passed the outline stage.  In order to give researchers a better chance of being funded at the full application stage, the review of outline applications will be on both remit and quality assessment by the Research Advisory Council.

Project grants are available up to £225,000 over 3 years to include the salary for a post-doctoral researcher and consumables. Project grants are available to established (lecturer and above) researchers with a strong track record in ageing research. Please note that outline applications will be first assessed for remit to the mission of the charity and eligibility criteria. If we receive a large number of applications, we will take forward only a limited number for full applications based on an initial screening for scientific merit.

The deadline for outline applications is 5pm 1 May 2008.

Ageing bladder and bowel funding

There is a huge social need to maintain continence throughout life. Urinary and faecal incontinence has been highlighted as a neglected research area that requires capacity building to understand the underpinning biology of the ageing bladder and bowel, as well as the need to develop effective interventions, diagnosis and preventative measures.

At present, little is known about the processes that contribute to incontinence and hence, therapies remain imprecise and non-specific, a major consequence of limited scientific information.

We would like to invite you to an exciting event in central London to provide further information on a new joint funding opportunity between Research into Ageing and BBSRC, with the aims of encouraging research applications that will:

  • increase our understanding of the physiology of the ageing bladder and bowel; or
  • explore preventative measures, treatments and diagnosis of urinary and faecal incontinence.
