Two smiling older Asian women walking outdoors, one wheeling a bicycleBritain is an ageing society: the proportion of older people in its population is set to increase rapidly this century.

Our understanding of the ageing process, of what it means to grow old and the implications for society and the economy, all depend upon successful research on ageing.

Our vision is of a future where people enjoy an active and fulfilled later life in greatly improved health. We believe that good health is possible far into later life, and our mission is therefore to develop solutions to enable all of us to enjoy full and healthy later lives.

We aim to support high-quality research into ageing to improve understanding, prevention and treatment of age-related health problems and diseases. Our strategy is to:

  • influence the national and international research agenda;
  • play a central role in funding research; and
  • disseminate research findings effectively.

By being centrally involved in research, we intend to improve our position as a leading authority on ageing and as a champion of older people.

We also aim to build capacity in research into ageing in the UK; we focus our funding streams to reflect this aim.

Our standards for research are rigorously maintained by a series of selection and review processes.

We will soon be called Age UK
