What We Fund
Research Home : What We Fund :

man with nurse Help the Aged is a major source of funding for research into ageing.

We spend £2 million per year on a wide range of research issues from social science, social policy and economics to biomedical science.

All our research is intended to provide findings which will improve the quality of life of older people, whether through helping to alleviate the problems of older age or by providing a better understanding of age-related conditions, such as incontinence, osteoarthritis or dementia.

How do we fund research?

Help the Aged funds and commissions esearch:

  • Commissioned research - chosen by the Charity to provide answers to specific policy research questions in areas such as fuel poverty, crime, transport and health matters. It is sometimes open to tendering or competition for funding. Find out how our policy research is comissioned.
  • Response mode research grants - consisting of major biomedical research grants which are competitively awarded through Research into Ageing. Find out how our biomedical research is funded.

Funding the Oxford Institute of Ageing

In addition, we provide core funding to the Oxford Institute of Ageing (OIA)through a special relationship with the University of Oxford. The institute is one of five major university institutes of ageing (alongside Newcastle, Sheffield, Keele, Oxford and King's College, London) and it has an international reputation for research excellence.

With OIA, we fund the publication of a major new journal, Age Horizons which is concerned with major future policy trends related to ageing.
